North Syracuse School District Continues Engagement with Steiger Training

The Board of Education of the North Syracuse Central School District has renewed its commitment to the team-building and team development process for the employees and staff of the Transportation Center of the district. Working with Ken Steiger, the process will address and improve core issues of team performance, and build on the successful effort begun in the Fall of 2008.

Successes initiated in the initial project include:

  • establishment of an employee Steering Committee
  • development and implementation of a survey to get feedback on six areas determined to have the greatest impact on morale and department culture
  • identification of employee priorities in each of these areas. Some of the issues that were addressed related to confidentiality and security of information; having an opportunity to ask and get answers to questions; and trying to bring staff and employees together in more informal ways.
  • creation and initiation of a recognition program
  • several social functions, including the Gala Opening of the new Transportation Center facility and a departmental Clam Bake
  • additional formal and informal efforts to bridge the gap between “staff” and “employees”

Steering committee members include on-bus, maintenance, and office personnel; supervisors and managers; and representation from the district administration and the Teamsters local. Goals for 2009 – 2010 will include strengthening the efforts previously begun, creating new and varied opportunities for participation and involvement, and identifying and implementing employee and staff development initiatives.

Steiger Training Facilitates Retreat for SU Student Affairs

Steiger Training & Development met with team members from the Office of Student Life (OSL) and Student Centers & Programming Services (SCPS) to present a day of team building and organizational development. The day was divided into two major segments: team building and skill building in the morning, using the Social Style model as a way of developing a deeper knowledge and acceptance of each other; and, in the afternoon, activities and guided discussion around the key elements of team effectiveness. The focus in both segments was on practical, applicable knowledge and skills designed to align the team around common goals while striving to work in a manner that demonstrates interpersonal excellence.

OSL/SCPS has decided to continue working with Steiger Training, and will schedule follow-up sessions throughout 2009, with the next sessions scheduled for March.

The Office of Student Life works with all students and student organizations on the SU campus, including Social Fraternity/Sorority, Cultural, International, Honorary, Professional, Academic, and Service, among others. Student Centers & Programming Services works very closely with the Office of Student Life.  SCPS offers many services to the SU community including Events Scheduling, Event Technical Services, and Student Center Operations.
